Water for wildlife
Water For Wildlife is our pet project. The knowledge that, if there is enough water in the forest for the wildlife to drink, there would be enough water for us all is the underlying idea for this work.
Water being the indispensable commodity for our survival, it's something that we cannot take for granted, but unfortunately we do. The state of water available on the planet for drinking deteriorates day by day. It's not only the state of the surface water that is depleting but the ground water is also facing challenges everyday. It is a fact that the ratio of groundwater is much higher than surface water available to us. However it is also a fact that this water once denuded is equally difficult to reclaim. In the current efforts, we plan to work towards the conservation of water and in turn know that along the way we will also conserve the wildlife and forest.
It's rather difficult to explain to people the importance of forest until and unless you directly connect it to the commodity that can endanger their own survival.
There has come a point where we need to take certain responsibility for our surroundings and conservation of resources that keep us safe, healthy and sane.
A primary resource that we need to take care of is water, simply because, water is life. It is a resource that is depleting over the years. The state of water in the forest areas of Goa is worsening every year. There is acute drinking water scarcity that crops up every summer. People in many villages across the state starve for water. Water being a scarce resource, also forces wildlife to move large distances in search of water. The scarcity of water will only get more acute, if we don't act on the same. To check the impact of water on wildlife in the area, we created waterholes and filled them throughout the winter and summer. The impact was considerable. The waterholes are being not only used by several species of birds, but also used by many species of herbivores as well as the top predators.
Since last decade, our focus has been to build awareness about wildlife of the Western Ghats and getting people fascinated by the same.
Today the times and needs have changed. We understand it very well that mere awareness and excitement around forest and wildlife is not good enough, we need action. We are here to enable the action.
Having recognised the issues and having studied them for over last 5 years, we at Planet Life Resorts have initiated the project 'Water for Wildlife'
We now plan to expand the project through construction of check dams and working on reviving the watersheds while working with people and government. These are participatory projects in which all can participate including you as individuals, as institutions and as organisations.
